Gira Originals campaign

FK bucket chair named a design icon

What makes an original an original? This is the intriguing question posed by Gira as 2020 begins. Not every new and groundbreaking product has what it takes to become a design classic. Many celebrated items of furniture and utility objects, beloved in their time, later vanish without a trace.

Yet true originals that endure do exist, and inspire enthusiasm the world over: intelligent building technology company Gira, maker of the iconic E2 light switch system, has teamed up with the creators of seven other perennial design classics – among them, the FK bucket chair by Walter Knoll. This “icon of modernity” features in the Gira Originals campaign, which celebrates products that fuse the essence of their era with timeless beauty.

The perfect combination of form, material and ergonomics, the FK was created by interior designers Preben Fabricius and Jørgen Kasthom for Walter Knoll in 1967. More than 50 years on, it can be found in homes, hotels, conference centers and boardrooms all over the world – even making an appearance in the cult film The Devil Wears Prada, as fearsome editor Miranda Priestly’s chair of choice.
